Mario not only wanted to be better than Pacman in arcades, but wanted to show them up by bringing gaming into the comfort of your own home with their first console in 1983, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), and boy did it work out. They had created their own mascot, Mario, to rival Pacman, the current champion of arcade gaming in the hopes of making Nintendo a bigger competitor in arcades.
